Wholesale manuka honey is a natural product from New Zealand made by bees that pollinate the leptospermum scoppartum bush. It is renowned globally for its healing properties and superior quality. The unique properties of this honey are attributed to the active ingredient Methylglyoxal (MGO) found in it.
Is Manuka honey worth the money?
MGO-enriched honeys have been shown to have antibacterial properties against a wide range of bacteria including MRSA, E. coli, Enterococcus faecalis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The MGO content of the honey also affects bacterial growth, with higher MGO levels showing greater antimicrobial activity.
In addition to its antibiotic properties, MGO-enriched honey has been shown to have other beneficial effects on wounds. The MGO in the honey inhibits inflammation, promotes fibroblast migration and collagen deposition, and sterilizes the wound. This has led to the use of honey as a topical dressing on ulcers and burn wounds.
Research has shown that the MGO content of the honey significantly influences its ability to disrupt established biofilms and kill bacteria. For example, Marckoll et al. used a multispecies wound biofilm model to test the ability of non-diluted Manuka and Norwegian Forest honey to penetrate and kill biofilm-embedded MRSA, methicillin-resistant S. epidermidis, ESBL Klebsiella pneumoniae and P. aeruginosa. They observed that both types of honey penetrated the established biofilm matrix and killed bacteria in a dose-dependent manner. MGO-enriched honeys were found to be more effective in a dose-dependent manner than methylglyoxal-rich honeys, suggesting that a factor other than methylglyoxal is responsible for the antibiofilm activity of MGO-enriched honeys.
